So many issues face us and I would like to share what I see as some of the most urgent. In addition, I would like to hear from you as to what you feel are the issues facing us as a community.
Campaign Issues: Traffic
With our rise in population traffic has become a greater issue for us all. In 2018, we had 38 traffic fatalities in Citrus County almost double that of deaths caused by drug overdose. Traffic is the link to which almost all crime is committed. Drug traffickers, robbers, burglars, all must travel to and from the scene of the crime. Thus enhanced enforcement of traffic laws reduces crime and saves lives.
If you doubt this simply look at the headlines and you will see the majority of drug arrests and warrant arrests are done as the result of a traffic stop. Even the current President of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) has identified traffic enforcement as the top goal due to its ability to interdict all forms of crime.
Campaign Issues: Employee Retention
Since 2017, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office has seen a large departure of experienced personnel. In addition, they have had difficulty filling openings in all aspects of the agency. Of course some rotation of personnel is expected, but not large losses of manpower. This situation was caused by the method of operation put in place by the current administration. A commitment must be made to provide employees, and volunteers, with a stable and supportive command structure. One that looks out for their interests and provides them with a safe and positive work environment. I have a philosophy I have used throughout my career, “Take care of your people and your people will take care of you.
